Art and Resistance Through Education (ARTE) is an innovative organization that uses art, design, and technology to amplify the voices of young people and foster leadership opportunities. ARTE encourages youth to develop creative solutions to and raise awareness of local and global human rights challenges. For its efforts in the fields of human rights and the visual arts, ARTE has received both local and international publicity and recognition.

 

Job Description:

In Fall 2023, ARTE will continue its work to empower New York City-based high-school aged youth in formal classroom and informal after-school settings by providing educational and arts-based programming around human rights, social justice, and abolition.

 

The Program Assistant will work to create and articulate the mission and goals of the organization in collaboration with ARTE’s team. They will primarily provide direct support to the Program Director and Executive Director in strategizing around and managing ARTE’s workshops, youth programming, annual fundraiser, and other initiatives and events. The Program Assistant will also have a hands-on programming role, working to support lead facilitators when necessary.

 

This position will consist of a combination of virtual and in-person work. NYC-based applicants are preferred. The Program Assistant’s work will include a combination of the following: 

Curriculum Development:

  • ​Work with the Program Director and Executive Director to develop curriculum for ARTE workshops in schools and with community organizations, including researching and creating digital and physical materials and identifying artists and activists whose work is relevant to the curriculum. 

Workshop Facilitation/Coordination: 

  • Support the hiring, outreach, and recruitment processes of program facilitators and youth program participants. 

  • Support lead facilitators, both in-person and virtually, for a selection of ARTE’s key programs (e.g., Youth Voices Lead, programs in jails, and other human rights and arts-based workshops with schools and community partners).

  • Support the Program Director with logistical program management, including: supporting weekly communication with program facilitators and participants, ensuring that pre- and post-workshop evaluations and paperwork are completed on a timely basis, tracking student feedback and incorporating it into the curriculum when needed, etc. 

 

Communications/Social Media: 

  • Help the Program Director summarize workshops and projects for end-of-year publication (i.e. Annual Report) and internal use;

  • When necessary, provide support to the ARTE Social Media Manager to strategize, craft, and/or edit social media campaigns, fundraising text, website copy, etc. as needed.

Background and Experience:

 

Individuals of all backgrounds and educational experiences (both formal and informal) are encouraged to apply. 

 

  • A bachelor's degree and/or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience is preferred. Candidates will preferably have some nonprofit or youth program facilitation experience.

  • Must possess a strong interest in amplifying social justice, arts education, advocating for human rights, and demonstrated communication and collaboration skills.  

  • Formerly incarcerated community members and/or those directly impacted by the mass incarceration system are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Applicants based in New York City are strongly preferred (we require that anyone working in-person be fully vaccinated and boosted).

  • Applicants should be flexible and willing to work with a small, but mighty, mostly remote team. 

Details:

  • The Program Assistant will work 10 hours per week, including any workshops or events they may attend, and will be compensated $10,000 for the duration of a 10-month contract (Late September / October 2023 through July 2024). 

  • The Program Assistant will need to be fingerprinted and receive background checks by the Department of Education prior to leading any programming with students. 

  • ARTE hopes to fulfill this position before October 2023
