Frequently Asked Questions

What’s your mission?

Art and Resistance Through Education (ARTE) engages young people to amplify their voices and organize for human rights change through the visual arts. Read more about our mission here.

What are some of the social justice issues your mural projects have focused on?

ARTE youth artists have designed and painted murals on a variety of issues such as: mass incarceration, gender equality, LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, racial discrimination, human trafficking, sexual violence, and immigration rights. These topics are chosen based off our students’ interests. Click here for a full list of our mural projects.

Why do you base your curriculum off the UDHR?

We believe youth should know about the UDHR because it outlines each individual’s rights and freedoms, and once they are equipped with that knowledge they can use it to advocate on local and global issues. If students don’t know their rights, how can they call out injustices in their communities and use art as activism?

Who should I contact to learn more about the UDHR and ARTE?

Please email marissa@artejustice.org for more information. You can also learn more about this by attending our Professional Development Workshops <link to page> or scheduling a group workshop.

Who have you done workshops with in the past?

These are some organizations/institutions we’ve led workshops for: Columbia University Teachers College, Harvard Graduate School of Education, New York University, City College of New York, New York Urban League, the Unitarian Universalist Association, the Maxine Greene School for Imaginative Inquiry, United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), Youth in Mind, Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA), and many others in and outside the United States.
