2020 Visions of Justice Nominee Criteria

  • As ARTE is based in Brooklyn, the preference is for an individual residing in New York City or tri-state area.

  • An individual who identifies as a woman of color and also applicants who identify as transgender, gender non-conforming, or gender non-binary.

  • A visual artist who made a significant contribution in using their artistic practice to bring awareness to human rights issues and/or inspire social justice action in their local communities or across the globe. There is a preference for artists who work as muralists and visual public artists and muralists who have demonstrated a strong commitment to youth development, given the scope of ARTE’s work.

  • The panel will consider collectives of artists, so long as that all of the criteria outlined above is fully honored.

  • We strongly encourage the nominations of formerly incarcerated artists and individuals who have been directly impacted by the criminal justice system.

  • Self-nominations will be considered.

The recipient will be determined by a panel of women-identified judges from the fields of art, design, culture and/or art education selected by ARTE. We are honored to include the following panel judges:

  • Jessie McGuire, ThoughtMatter

  • Kemi Ilesanmi, The Laundromat Project

  • Monica Montgomery Nyathi, Prince George's African American Museum and Cultural Center

  • Priyanka Dasgupta

  • Robyne Walker Murphy, Groundswell Community Mural Project

The recipient will publicly receive the  award at our 2020 Visions of Justice fundraiser on Saturday, February 29, 2020. Each year, ARTE holds a fundraiser to raise much needed funds to support our programming across New York City.

Nominations are open and will remain open until February 7th, 2020.
